📝What Is the California Handgun Roster?
The California Handgun Roster is a list of handguns certified for sale in California. Since January 1, 2001, only handguns that have passed safety tests—including firing, drop, and safety feature evaluations—can be sold by dealers in the state. The roster is maintained by the California Department of Justice.
🔍How to Check the Roster
You can search the official roster by manufacturer, model, caliber, or barrel length here: Handguns Certified for Sale.
Recently added models are listed here: Recently Added Handgun Models.
Removed models are listed here: Removed Handgun Models.
📄What’s Required for a Handgun to Be Listed?
To be listed, a handgun must:
- Pass firing, safety, and drop tests conducted by a DOJ-certified lab.
- Include safety features such as a chamber load indicator and magazine disconnect mechanism.
- For semi-automatic pistols, incorporate microstamping technology, which imprints a unique identifier on each cartridge case when fired.
These requirements are outlined in California Penal Code sections 31900–32110.
💬What If a Gun Isn’t on the Roster?
If a handgun isn’t on the roster, it generally cannot be sold by dealers in California. However, exemptions exist for:
- Private party transfers conducted through a licensed dealer.
- Curio/relic handguns.
- Certain single-action revolvers.
- Law enforcement purchases.
Always consult your local FFL dealer to confirm legality before purchasing.
